Abortion

Protecting your choices

One of our major factors as a party is addressing the fact that everyone has a choice, a choice from what they eat in the morning, to what type of shoes they want to wear and not only that but as a person, everyone has the right to be able to choose whatever they want, that is why people have to right to vote, and the right to freedom of speech, so why not let women decide wheather they can or can’t have a child. There are so many possible situations. Perhaps a woman is in the risk of dying if they have a child, or maybe they were raped, and they didn’t have the choice of whether or not they wanted to have the child or not. Or maybe, they just aren’t in an ideal situation to be pregnant. Our belief is that a woman does not need to be violated in order to have a decision about her own pregnancy. This ideal is also referred to as being pro-choice. When it comes to the topic of abortion, there are also a few people out there who consider themselves “pro-life,” defined as being opposed abortions. When someone claims to be pro-life, they argue that the unborn derserve rights too, and that they have no say when it comes to their own abortion. But “the unborn” is the picture perfect group to advocate for. They are ethically simple uncomplicated, unlike the addicted, incarcerated or the poor. They will never demand anything from you. They allow you to feel good about yourself without having to create or maintain relationships. Being so called “pro-life” gives you the ability to fight for the unborn without having to challenge your own wealth, priviledge or power. The pro-life movement could really almost be called pro-birth. Because if they really cared about “life,” they would take these statistics we are about to give you and begin to open their minds. BMJ Sexual and Reproductive Health states that in the year 1966, the leader of Romania made it illegal for women to get abortions. As a result, many women resorted to back-alley abortions, done themselves, that ended in the deaths of over 10,000 women. Maternal mortality rate doubled in Romania between 1966 and 1989. During this time period, hundreds of thousands of unwanted children were left to orphanages, who were unable to care for them properly due to lack of funding and resources. Once abortion in Romania was made legal again in 1990 and since then, the amount of deaths from mother and child has dropped drastically, therefore saving more lives. Making abortions illegal will result in more babies thrown into dumpsters, more children abused and unwanted by their parents, more babies born into situations babies shouldn’t be born in, more women dying from at home abortions and more kids in the foster system. What making abortions illegal won’t do is stop abortions. It will only make them unsafe. Childwelfare.gov conducted a study that concluded almost half a million children in the United States were in the foster system in 2017. That is almost half a million children born into unfortunate situations where they could not be cared for. These statistics should make you uncomfortable. This is what happens when the government thinks it is okay to regulate a female's sexual reproductive rights. If we outlaw abortion, many more lifes will be lost. That does not sound like “pro-life.” Our party will not only ensure safe abortions will be accessible, but a better sex education, affordable contraceptives and better support and funding for children already in the system can be promised. Giving families access to intensive family preservation services and providing adequate follow-ups from CPS to families who may be at risk is part of our plan to make this happen. This will especially benefit under-priviledged women and our hope is to let them know that they are not alone and that under our leadership, they will always have a choice.
